Dr. Rick Botelho Appointed to Advisory Board
HealthSciences Institute welcomes Rick Botelho, MD, Professor of Family Medicine and Assistant Dean of Faculty and Student Development at the new College of Medicine (Florida International University, Miami), to the HealthSciences Institute advisory board. Dr. Botelho has been the recipient of $4.5 million dollars of faculty development grants over the past 20 years. He is author of the 2004 book Motivational Practice: Promoting Healthy Habits and Self-care of Chronic Diseases. Dr. Botelho will partner with HealthSciences Institute in 2010 on an innovative peer health coaching pilot targeting clinicians in health coaching, disease management and care management roles. This pilot is a response to many professionals in our community who have openly shared their personal and family challenges regarding weight management, physical activity, healthful eating and disease self-care. Additionally, a number of studies have demonstrated that the personal health habits and “change literacy” of clinicians not only influence self-health, but also the readiness and capacity of clinicians to guide patients in health promotion and self-care. The pilot will support professionals in self-health and lifestyle change skills. Dr. Botelho will also be presenting at an upcoming Population Health Improvement Learning Collaborative meeting. Stay tuned for opportunities for community members and organizations to participate in this exciting new pilot program at no cost, on a space available basis. Please contact us if you would like us to add your name or your organization to the email list for this pilot program. Cheers to your health!
