A pioneer in the creation of the U.S. Accountable Care Organization (ACO)--and influence on HealthSciences Institute's guiding belief that better health care requires both evidence-based medicine and organization development--Dr. Shortell is one of the most important figures in health care today. As Principal Investigator on the National Surveys of Physician Organizations (NSPO1, 2, and 3), his primary expertise is conceptualizing, measuring, and analyzing organizational factors associated with physician organization and health system performance. His papers have appeared many organizational research and health services/health policy research journals, authoring or co-authoring ten books. he is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, former editor of Health Services Research, and a President of the Association for Health Services Research. His awards for visionary work are many.
